Changing the Proportions
If you are in a good financial situation at the moment, you may find it quite tempting to do a full-scale renovation or house expansion. Perhaps you’re extending the house for a room for the kids or a hobby room. Either way, when doing a large-scale renovation, you will have to look at the big picture: “How will the house look if I expand it upwards or outwards”. Just make sure that the materials in the new part match the rest of the layout of the house and surrounding property.
Preview the Front Door
The front door is the gateway to your house (literally), and as such you must have it be in line with the rest of your home (and even the neighbourhood). It just doesn’t look good if you have a modern house with aluminium cladding with an old and traditional wooden door. If you don’t want to purchase a new door, consider doing a paint job. This way you can make it fit with almost any combo. If you want to go for a more grandiose solution, consider getting an archway or changing the structure of the area around the door.
Getting a New Roof
Depending on the scale of your house, the roof can be an imposing element. That is why it’s a critical aspect of your house. You can change the shapes of the tiles, replace the old ones, or just improve the ones you already have. Keep in mind that roof renovations can get expensive fast. If you opt for a full renovation, keep in mind that you will have to add insulation to meet building regulations (that may differ from country to country).
Utilize the Garage
Remember to clean the place up before putting new utilities in. Accumulated dirt and dust can lead to a multitude of breathing issues as well as larger problems for people who are already suffering from some respiratory issues. So before making that garage into a cool new living room, make sure to scrub it firmly! Depending on the scope of your ambitions, you might want to consult an architect. Just in case so you don’t do any irreversible structural damage and that the proportions remain precise. That can also possibly add value to the house depending on how you convert it. So there is always a hidden benefit.
Garden Makeover
How you manage your garden speaks a lot about you as a person. Another way of working on your exterior would be to change the garden layout and any ornaments that you have outside. Remember, some types of plants fit better with different styles of houses. Loropetalum adds a wonderland-esque appearance to your property, while Japanese Boxwood gives off an oriental vibe.
Cladding
Cladding is usually the go-to choice when looking for a property makeover. When you’re looking for a new look or design for your house, it’s vital to take into account other factors (like light and shadow differences, and the overall aesthetic of the property). If you are uncertain about some aspects of wall cladding, you would be advised to consult your supplier. Have them give you some samples so you can test it out and see what fits, what’s better looking, and what suits you best. Carefully ask about the materials you are considering, as some materials are heavier than others (obviously), and can affect the structure. Some notable cladding options include:
• Brick wall cladding
Ah, brick walls. Nothing gives off an old and vintage atmosphere like brick wall cladding. It turns a house into a home. Aside from giving off a pleasant aura, they are also fire-resistant, weatherproof, low maintenance, non-toxic, and durable. They are also often recycled into new bricks.
• Aluminium cladding
The aluminium cladding looks stunning when applied. It’s aesthetic, durable, and is resilient versus the elements. It is the perfect choice for relatively new houses and new renovations.
• Hardwood timber cladding
That is an option most suited to contemporary houses and is relatively cheaper on average but still resilient versus the elements.
Demolish Old Structures
Now we all know it can be tough saying goodbye to some parts of your house, especially if they hold emotional value. But sometimes, it’s simply not feasible to maintain them. After the structure has become expensive to upkeep or is just getting on your nerves, it’s time to demolish it. Demolishing a building over rebuilding it can be more profitable than renovating in some cases, and that is why you should keep this option in mind.
