How to Protect Spine When You Are Suffering from Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is an orthopedic condition that badly affects our bones while making them brittle and porous. Most commonly, this is an age-related issue that mostly affects people over 60.

Bone deterioration is a natural phenomenon that is seen in everyone. After 30-35 years of age, our body attains its peak bone density, and after that, the formation of new bone cells becomes slow while the breakdown of old bone becomes faster. In the initial stages, no significant changes or symptoms are noticed but with age, certain complications start to occur. In some people, the speed of bone breakdown is higher than in others, and they are likely to develop osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis can occur anywhere in the body including the spine. Being a silent condition, osteoporosis sometimes develops into a serious issue where severe fractures occur without any specific cause. Some cases may even require the application of ortho implants to stabilize broken bone fragments. Now, if the condition progresses to the spine, situations could be different as the affected person may experience more severe symptoms along with difficulties in performing simple daily activities.

In this post, our goal is to discuss the ways to prevent spinal issues in people suffering from osteoporosis.

Protecting Your Spine When You Are Suffering from Osteoporosis

There is no specific location where osteoporosis could occur, as it could develop anywhere in the body. The spine is one of the locations where the condition can progress, and there, it could lead to the weakening of one or more vertebrae. Sometimes, vertebrae could become so weak that they even become unable to bear the body’s weight. In such cases, vertebral compression fractures are experienced by people. However, the development of these situations can be prevented by taking several appropriate measures after knowing that you are suffering from osteoporosis. Such measures include:

Regular Checkups

Osteoporotic people must go for regular checkups to stay up to date about the progression of the condition. This is most important as you don’t know whether the medications you are taking are working positively or not. With regular visits to the doctor, you will come to know about the seriousness of the issue plus, if changes in the medication are required, they can also be made timely.

Have a Complete Diet

Diet always plays a vital role in preventing the progression of osteoporosis. A complete diet must be taken by osteoporotic people as it helps minimize the chances of worsening the condition. A diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, and other minerals is highly effective, and to get all this, a variety of food items must be there on the plate.

Quit Smoking and Avoid Alcohol Consumption

Tobacco intake is directly associated with the weakening of bones and especially osteoporotic people must quit smoking and consumption of tobacco in any form. Besides this, alcohol intake must also be limited as this also causes the weakening of bones. Above all, it is also advised to avoid the consumption of carbonated drinks like soda and cold drinks.

Avoid Sedentary Lifestyle

Though everyone must adopt a healthy lifestyle, it becomes more important for osteoporotic people to consider this. A sedentary lifestyle is a big reason for many to develop bone-related conditions like osteoporosis, and for those who are already suffering from such a condition, adopting a sedentary lifestyle will worsen the condition. So, a healthy lifestyle will not only protect your spine but also prevent the progression of osteoporosis.
