Beauty Over 50: Makeup Tips for Senior Women

For many years, makeup has primarily been targeted for younger women, including the formulas, colours, and textures. Because of this, many senior women have been struggling to enhance their features in the best way. Mature skin is different than those of younger women, including the techniques needed to achieve wanted results. Fortunately, knowledge for every age is more accessible than ever. If you were wondering about the best makeup tips for senior women, read on for our tips on beauty over 50.

Makeup Primer

A primer is a base for your skin that goes under foundation, and it creates a smooth canvas for makeup application. It makes your makeup last longer, it smooths out fine lines and evens out your skin. If you want to use eye shadow, you can also apply an eye shadow primer. There are primers for different skin types, as well as the effect you want to achieve. Generally, senior skin is on the drier side, so a hydrating primer will suit it best. Apply a thin layer on your face and gently rub it in.

Foundation

If you want to further smooth out your skin and even out your skin tone, you can use a foundation. Since mature skin is drier, a lightweight foundation, BB, or CC cream will look good on it. BB creams are a mix between a foundation and face cream and are perfect for light daily coverage. CC creams correct some skin issues you may have, usually redness with their green tint. Foundation offers the most coverage, but it can also make your skin look dry, and settle into pores and fine line. Foundations range from light to dark and from a pink to yellow tint. Test every product on the hand in between your index finger and thumb. This spot closely represents the colour and texture on your face.

Applying Foundation

There are several foundation application techniques. You can use a brush, a sponge, or even your fingers. A brush can layer on the foundation, and even leave streaks, so it’s not the best technique. A sponge, or even better, a beauty blender, will evenly spread out your foundation and blend it seamlessly into your skin. They can soak up the excess of the liquid, and leave you with a photo-ready result. Start from the centre of your face and blend it outwards. Don’t forget the ears and the neck. If you’ve missed the shade, it will show up on the jawline, so make sure you blend the foundation down.

Concealer

Concealer will help you mask any blemishes you want to hide or dark under-eye circles. For the under-eye area, use liquid concealers and for blemishes, you can use cream concealers, as they have a higher masking power. Apply the concealer in an upside-down triangle under your eyes and blend. It will reflect the light and visually lift your face.

Face Powder

Face powders are an easy trap to fall into. They provide great coverage, but it’s easy to overdo it and make your face cake-like, and also dry it out. Powders can seep into pores and fine lines, creating powder marks. If your skin is leaning on very oily, lightly apply the face powder only on the T-zone where it’s the oiliest. Remember to use a face powder that is the same, or at least similar, shade to your foundation.

Blush and Bronzer

A great duo for summertime and for further defining your features. For the blush, use a cream one, as they are way lighter on the skin and easy to blend. Lightly dab it onto your cheekbones while smiling. Blend if needed. Don’t swipe it all over your cheeks up to your ears. It may look extreme and draw focus only on that spot. Bronzer can give you a more youthful, tan look. Choose the ones with fine powder particles and without shimmer. Apply lightly under your cheekbones and along the hairline on your forehead.

Eyebrows

Eyebrows frame your whole face, and they are especially important if you wear glasses. Keep your brows as tidy. If you want to fill them in, use a thin eyebrow pencil with a brush on the other end to brush out any harsh lines. Follow your natural eyebrow shape, and pencil in the lines lightly. Brush out and apply a bit of eyebrow gel. If you are looking for a semi-permanent solution, microblading at a salon as Lash Blossom will help you achieve the perfect brows. You will save time and effort when doing makeup from then.

Eye Shadow and Mascara

A good trick for eye shadow is to use a cream product, as it doesn’t settle into the lines and wrinkles on the lids. Choose a colour to your liking and apply it. Use a cream eyeliner or kohl to define your eyes. Use a waterproof mascara that won’t smudge if your eyes water.

Lipstick

Choose natural colours, as they best accentuate the lips and make them visually fuller. Fleshy lip liners and lip gloss are a perfect combination for mature skin. Lipstick should be a few shades darker than the colour of your lips.

Beauty over 50 doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. Try to accentuate your best features, and opt for a more natural look when in doubt.
