In his Annual Report on immigration for 2018, the country’s Minister of Immigration, Ahmed Hussein, announced plans to admit up to 1,080,000 new permanent residents between 2019 and 2021, with an upper limit of 370,000 for 2021.
That is 84,000 more than the 286,000 people who were admitted as permanent residents in 2018.
Introducing the report, Hossein, who originally came to Canada as a Somali refugee, said:
“Immigrants and their descendants have made an amazing contribution to Canada, and our future success depends on how we continue to provide them with a warm welcome and good integration.”
Canada plans to attract more than 1.2 million new immigrants over the next three years. The federal secretary of immigration said Friday as the country tries to fill gaps in its labor market and stimulate the economy, both severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said the federal government plans to admit 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, approximately another 411,000 in 2022, and 421,000 in 2023.
Why Is Canada Looking For Immigrants?
Cities and rural areas in Canada depend on visitors to sustain population growth and support their labor markets. Canada is also experiencing an aging population, and without a robust immigration system, Canada would have been on a trajectory like Japan in the 1990s.
But unlike Japan, Canada has adopted immigration, which has enabled them to support a significant proportion of the working-age population, ranging from 25 to 54. It would not have been possible without mass immigration to Canada.
The Requirements To Immigrate To Canada
The documents you need to apply for immigration depend on the program you are applying for. For instance, some immigration programs require Canadian experience, and some do not require Canadian expertise at all.
Documentation that is likely to be required includes identification/travel documents, educational documents, proof of work experience, financial history, and so on. To determine what documents you will need, you should first determine which immigration program is most appropriate for you.
The Amount Of Money Needed To Immigrate To Canada
The funds required to immigrate to Canada vary widely. Some immigration programs require nothing more than a fee to process your application. Others require a significant investment in Canada. We break them down into the categories listed below.
Economic Immigration Option
Most economic categories of immigration require proof that you can support yourself financially when you move to Canada. Some, however, do not.
Economic immigration categories that do not require proof of settlement funds usually require applicants to have Canadian work experience or offer Canadian work. These applicants do not require funds to move to Canada, given that they have already integrated into the Canadian workforce.
Business Immigration Option
All forms of business immigration require significant investment in Canada. It may require the applicant to invest in a Canadian company or provide interest-free credit to a federal or provincial government.
Family Sponsorship Option
In most cases, you do not need to provide financial information to sponsor a spouse or dependent child.
If you sponsor other family members, such as a parent or grandparent, a financial requirement should be met to be eligible to apply.
Humanitarian And Refugee Sponsorship
If you apply on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, there are no financial requirements. For this category of immigration, financial information is required only if the refugee is a private sponsor.
If this is the case, the Canadian group sponsoring the refugee must prove that it has raised enough funds to sponsor the refugee resettlement.

Immigration To Canada From If You Are A Semi-Skilled Or Unskilled Worker
Some jobs require on-the-job training or labor-intensive jobs that do not require post-secondary education. Believe it or not, many provinces and territories in Canada lack such workers.
For this reason, Canada has developed special immigration pilot projects designed for semi-skilled or unskilled workers in jobs such as trucking, agriculture, and home care.
After working in Canada for 6-9 months and receiving offers of full-time employment from their employers, these workers can apply for permanent residence in Canada through the following pilot projects and many others:
- Agri-Food Immigration Pilot
- Long-Haul Truck Driver Pilot
- Child and Home Care Provider Pilot
