Stargirl is a new CW original series, with its second season set to air in 2021. The first season first premiered on the streaming service DC Universe but was later picked up by The CW where it was later renewed for a second season. The series was created by Geoff Johns, and it’s based on the DC comic books. Learn more about the five main characters in the series below!
Courtney Whitmore is a teenager reluctantly living in Blue Valley, Nebraska after moving from Los Angeles when her mom marries her stepdad, Pat Dugan. She has a seemingly normal life in the beginning, but that all changes when she finds a strange and powerful weapon, the Cosmic Staff, after moving in with her stepfather. Courtney eventually becomes Stargirl, and her stepfather tags along on missions to keep her safe.
Pat Dugan marries Courtney Whitmore’s mother, and Courtney is not happy to have a new stepdad. Dugan isn’t exactly elated at the idea of having a new stepdaughter either, but he becomes a mentor to Courtney throughout the series. Dugan works as a mechanic that owns his own car repair shop, later allowing him to craft incredible equipment. After Courtney finds the Cosmic Staff among his belongings and becomes Stargirl, Dugan creates his own power armor called Special Tactics Robotic Integrated Power Enhancer or S.T.R.I.P.E.
Rick Tyler is an angry young man and troublemaker at his high school, but he is the son of Rex Tyler, the original Hourman. Rick’s parents are both killed in a car accident when he was a young boy, and he and Courtney eventually become friends. Rick joins the new JSA as Hourman II.
Yolanda Montez seems to have it all, as she is one of the most popular kids in school and she is a promising athlete, especially when it comes to boxing. When she runs for student body president, another girl in school sabotages her efforts and makes her a social outcast among her peers.
Yolanda and Courtney also become friends, and Courtney convinces her to take on the identity of Wildcat II. The original Wildcat was a character in the DC universe named Ted Grant, and Yolanda attempts to carry on his legacy.
Beth Chapel is a shy and socially awkward teenager at Blue Valley Highschool that has trouble making friends at the beginning. After finding Doctor Mid-Nite’s goggles in the series, Beth takes on the role of Doctor Midnite II.
It’s impossible to create a television that pulls you in the way Stargirl does without having a set of characters that are both compelling and complex. Gone are the days where superheroes and villains are one-dimensional. These characters are likable, though flawed, and they come together for a unique television experience.
